KEEP Ireland Open held a celebratory rally on Saturday afternoon to celebrate the complete reopening of the Upper Vartry Trail.
A section of the popular trail was closed off in February when a section of the pathway was blocked with a fence extending into the water, preventing walkers from completing the circular route.
Sport Ireland, Wicklow County Council, Wicklow Uplands Council and County Wicklow Partnership were involved in discussions with local landowners to find a resolution and the trail fully opened to the public again on Tuesday, October 18.
Initially, Keep Ireland Open had planned a protest against the blockage of the trail, but that was changed to a celebration walk once the trail had been reopened. Speakers included Green Party TD Patrick Costello, Cllr Eoin Ó Broin of the Social Democrats, planning consultant Judy Osborne and Keep Ireland Open Chairman Robert Dowds.
